The REAL Cause of Heart Attacks [Episode #19]

 

The Real Cause of Heart Attack—Running for Your Life!

 

“Heart disease is on the rise”—we hear it all the time, don’t we?  

 

“Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack.” (CDC)

 

“About 15% of people who have a heart attack will die from it.” (CDC)

 

There is no doubt about it—heart attack is serious business.  Many people are at risk and countless lives are affected greatly by the repercussions of heart attacks.  But there are some things we don’t know—some forbidden truth being held back—that has the potential to better our chances and change the way we treat and prevent heart attacks.  We’re going to share that information with you today.  It’s up to you to put it into action.   

First of all, let’s be sure we’re on the same page about what causes heart attack, because if we’re going to make a real difference, we need to be clear on what heart attack is and what the underlying problem is in order to address it appropriately.  According to the American Heart Association, the two main causes of heart attack are:  arterial blockage (also known as an “occlusion”) and arterial spasm.  It is important to note that arterial spasm can occur both in normal or blocked arteries.  It is also important to understand that only 40% of heart attacks leading to death are caused by occlusion, the other 60% by arterial spasm.  

 

Also according to the American Heart Association, “We’re not sure what causes a spasm.”  

 

I’d like to challenge that notion, if you don’t mind.  

 

Just a brief lesson in basic biology—hang with me.  We have two main branches of the nervous system:  the central nervous system, which has to do with motor nerve control, enabling us to get up, walk around, and do all the voluntary things that we do with our bodies, and the autonomic nervous system, which is the automatic function, controlling things like digestion, sleeping, elimination, detoxification, growth, and all the other things that our bodies are doing without us having to think about them.  

 

Now within the autonomic nervous system, there are two arms, known as the sympathetic, better understood with regard to our “fight or flight” response, and the parasympathetic, which runs our “rest and digest” mode.  These two arms work in union with each other, essentially speeding up and slowing down as needed, depending whether it’s time to run for your life or to just keep things relaxed and business as usual.  

 

Here is the problem, folks.  

 

We’re not getting out of “fight or flight” mode.  We are constantly “running for our lives,” in regard to work, kids, the mortgage, social situations—we are never just “resting and digesting.”  We are under constant attack from the demands of work and home, under constant oppression from environmental toxins, and what’s more, we’re not even feeding ourselves to appropriately fuel for all the craziness of life we have to endure.  We are running on empty.  This is 60% of the heart attack epidemic.  This is why it’s time to take control of what we can control, say no to the rat race, to the pressure to “keep up with the Joneses,” to the sleepless nights, and the madness of our modern, western lifestyles.  Take back real food.  Take back rest.  Take back that forbidden doctor within that knows exactly what you need when you need it.  You owe it to yourself.

How To Prevent Blood Clots And Edema On Your Next Flight [Episode #18]

Have you ever experienced swollen ankles when flying in an airplane?  How about trouble fitting your shoes on your feet from time to time?  Have your socks ever left an indentation in your lower leg that just seems to linger?  Do you just know you’re carrying extra water weight?

Sometimes these things happen due to natural hormone cycles or a bout of less than stellar nutritional choices.  Sometimes adding some high-quality protein into the diet is just the trick you need to put an end to the puffiness. 

But sometimes these little inconveniences—these minor discomforts—are your body’s way of signaling that there is a much more serious problem at hand. 

If we’re talking about a serious, medical edema, chances are we are talking about (A) the heart, wherein the heart isn’t pumping fluid strongly enough to overcome the force of gravity to get the fluid back to the upper part of the body, resulting in swelling in the lower parts, i.e. the legs and feet, or (B) the kidneys, where the body is simply not getting rid of excess fluids. 

Now it goes without saying that if you find yourself in a crisis situation, you need to submit to crisis medical care.  But that does not mean that you shouldn’t also address the reason for the crisis and work on healing that underlying problem. 

So let’s talk about the heart.  The heart is the first organ in the body to suffer from malnutrition, which is why we are seeing more and more heart conditions in younger and younger people.  However, the really amazing thing about the heart is that it is also very quick to respond to good nutrition.  We have demonstrated this with patients by listening to their heart sounds with the endocardiograph, providing them with high-quality nutritional supplements, and then after a matter of minutes, listening to the heart once again.  The difference is astounding! See the picture below of a before and after.

As I mentioned, another cause of medical edema can be kidney dysfunction.  Specifically, disease or damage can cause an accumulation of fluid in the lower legs and feet.  And again, rather than the diuretic medications created to force the kidneys to get rid of excess fluid waste, we choose to feed the kidneys with high-quality nutritional supplements. 

And this topic just wouldn’t be complete without a little nod to everyone’s favorite organ, the liver.  Everything we eat comes through the liver in digested form before entering the bloodstream—the same bloodstream that supplies both your heart and kidneys Your liver throws itself on a toxic grenade for you every day to keep you alive and it can get tired We have a PLAN for that too! 

So follow your doctor’s advice.  Take the medications he prescribes.  But don’t simply cover up the symptoms of a larger problem.  Address the reason for the problem.  And when that problem subsides, return to your doctor for reevaluation and work to wean off of the medications.  A good doctor will be happy to see your progress, and you can rest better at night knowing you’ve listened to that “forbidden doctor” inside you that knows the way to restore and rebuild.

The Forbidden Approach to Reversing Autism [Episode #17]

 A whopping 70-80% of the function of our nervous system is input to the brain.  The brain’s output is important as well, of course, and does tell the various parts of the body what to do to maintain optimum function, but the vast majority of its job is to receive information; it’s listening, hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling.  That’s why the connection between the world and our body and our body and our brain is so critical.  And that’s why, when that connection is disrupted, as is the case with autism, things have the potential to go horribly awry.  

One in 53 children in Utah today are diagnosed with autism; one in two predicted by the year 2020.

One in 20 males born today will be diagnosed with autism.  

The team at Teach Autism predicts a 230% increase in adults with autism in the next eight years.  

These are some staggering statistics and need to be addressed.  

The medical community is addressing them; however, the proposed treatment consists of medications to manage some of the symptoms of autism and behavioral modification therapies to manage, and in essence script, the behavior—what the illness looks like to society.  It does not address the underlying reasons for the disorder; nor does it hope to fix or cure the actual problem at hand.  

These are our children we’re talking about—our future.  There has to be a way.  

There is.  

First of all, the “causes” of autism are many and varied, and are almost always cumulative.  Just as in the case of POTTENGER’S CATS, discussed in an earlier blog post, we are now generations and generations malnourished, exposed to environmental and pharmaceutical toxins, and ultimately, genetically compromised, even from before birth.  Those causes are all things we can be aware of during our years of childbearing.  But what if you already have a child with autism?  

There is hope.  

I know we talk a lot about “healing and sealing the gut.”  That is because it is the single, most critical aspect of health and healing.  Without a healed and sealed gut, you cannot absorb nutrition; you cannot excrete waste; you cannot fight infection; you cannot restore and rebuild that connection between the world and the body and the body and the brain that needs so badly to take place in an autistic person.

The Safe Way To Cleansing, Detoxification & Weight Loss  [Episode #15]

Everybody is about the cleanse lately—shakes, drinks, fasts—elaborate plans to clean out the colon, the liver, and whittle away that middle in time for bathing suit season.  In fact, the terms “cleansing” and “detoxification” are up 420% in Google since December 2014.  That’s saying something!  The problem is that people desperate for that beach-worthy body or wedding-dress-ready figure are willing to do just about anything it takes to achieve the results they’re looking for, sans any kind of real knowledge about the effects these types of “remedies” have on the systems of the body.  Today I’d like to break through some of the fog surrounding cleansing and detox and show you how you can get on the right path to cleaning things up and losing weight, while increasing your overall health at the same time.  

So first of all, let’s talk about what happens during a “cleanse” or “detox.”  Vegetables, fruits, bitter herbs—these are the mainstay of many cleanses, and these pull toxic build-up of chemicals and heavy metals out of the fat stores, through the lymphatic system, through the liver, through the digestive system, which act as the body’s waste management system.  

Now here is where the problem lies.  Most of us, if we have been eating what is known as the Standard American Diet—or “SAD,” more appropriately—have what we refer to as “leaky gut.”  So if you have a leaky gut and you do one of these intense cleanses in a last-ditch effort to “lose ten pounds in ten days” or “lose five inches and a dress size by this time next week,” as all the magazine covers claim is not only possible but “healthy,” all those toxins that are being pulled out of your fat stores and flushed through the liver have to go somewhere.  And if your gut is not sealed tight, like a fresh, pink, healthy tube, but instead is porous and degenerated, guess where those toxins go?  Some of them make their way out, but many of them end up right back in the bloodstream, making you sicker than you started out!  

This is why it’s so important to “heal and seal” the gut first.  I know we’ve talked about this before but it is crucial to understand the importance of a healthy gut before trying to detoxify, in order that those chemicals you’re working so hard to rid yourself of may actually make it out of the body.  

So fats and proteins heal and seal—meat, fish, dairy, eggs—and that is the number one process to set in order before considering a cleanse.  When you are ready to cleanse, you don’t need shakes and drinks and diet plans.  It can be done with real food, juices, nutrients, supplements, and we have an excellent protocol that has helped so many achieve amazing results.  So don’t go crazy with the weight-loss fad of the day.  Eat smart for total health.  We’ll give you the resources, but you are the forbidden doctor!

We All Face Death. Here's How To Prepare [Episode #14]

Live And Let Die

Death.  Talk about a “forbidden” topic of conversation!  The concept of dying and exiting this world is uncomfortable.  And yet, dying is a natural thing.  In fact, it is something we are good at from before we are born, as our cells divide and differentiate in our mother’s womb.  So while it may be just a little bit taboo, I believe that a healthy understanding of some of the events surrounding the process of death can help to eliminate the fear of the unknown as pertains to our own passing, or that of friends and family members, and perhaps even have an effect on how we choose to live. 

Our bodies are made to live, but they are also made to die.  All the way down to a single cell—apoptosis, the natural death of a cell—the idea is for each cell to be healthy enough that it lives the life it’s programmed to live until it’s programmed to die.  Even though death can seem like an event—sudden, unexpected, final—it is indeed a process, and one that follows a sort of pattern we can be aware of. 

Three main control systems within the body that are geared toward keeping us alive from moment to moment are:  the regulation of oxygen and carbon dioxide, arterial blood pressure, and extracellular constituents such as electrolytes and basic chemical balances.  As we approach death, these (and other) functions begin to change, and what was once considered to be “autoregulated” begins to be “deregulated,” and the process of death commences. 

As systems weaken, breathing slows.  As breathing slows, less oxygen is available to the muscles and the body becomes tired.  Lack of interest, diminished appetite, and a restlessness that may show itself in repetitive motions such as picking at the bed linens or even at the air—all just signs of less and less oxygen being made available to the tissues, organs, and brain.  Involuntary loss of urine or feces is possible, as the muscles that control the bowel and bladder relax.  Trouble regulating temperature, and pallor may occur, as blood pressure drops and less blood travels to the surface of the skin.  The swallowing reflex weakens to such an extreme that in the last moments of life, an accumulation of fluid at the back of the throat can create what is known as the “death rattle.” 

As alarming as some of these things may be, understanding that death is merely a part of life, and that in death we find ultimate rest—a ceasing—and that moving on is really more like doing absolutely nothing, we may find comfort. 

In some cultures it is common practice to place a hand on the head of the person who has just breathed his or her last and say something to the effect of “Now you have died and will leave your body.  Your work here is finished.  There is nothing you can take with you.  Let go of everything, including all regrets, and be your true self, a being of light and love for all those you have known and not known.  Now you can learn everything you need, generate supreme faith and devotion to your refuge and the wish to be unified with your God.”

My challenge to you—don’t wait until the dying process begins.  With the awareness of the reality of death and what it will bring, let go of regrets now; be your true self; and get to living!

Let go of everything, including all regrets, and be your true self, a being of light and love for all those you have known and not known. Now you can learn everything you need, generate supreme faith and devotion to your refuge, and now the wish to be unified with your God.”

Eliminating Hemorrhoids Once And For All [Episode #13]

Imagine, if you will:  Candlelight, soft music… Your lover gazes softly at you from across the table.  The kids are at Grandma’s house.  The atmosphere smells of hormones.  Pupils are dilated.  A gentle touch, the promise of soon being much… much closer… 

Then it hits!  The dreaded “H-word.”  You know the one.  HEMORRHOIDS.  They know no bounds of race, creed, or economic status.  They care not to which political party you subscribe or what country club you’re a member of. 

The all too familiar burning, itching, irritation begs even the most dignified among us to stealthily conceal creams and wipes and pads promising freedom from this most undignified situation amongst the cereal and pasta in the bottom of the shopping cart. 

The problem is—as with most of our crisis care based healthcare system—that those creams and wipes and pads are really only focused on reducing symptoms… for a time.  They do nothing to address the reason behind (no pun intended) the symptoms.  

Well, what if I told you the reason behind the symptoms is ridiculously simple to treat?  Inexpensive?  Non-invasive?  Doesn’t involve humiliation or pulling or cutting or bleeding from the bum in front of a room full of medical professionals? Is your interest piqued yet?  

First let’s be clear on exactly what hemorrhoids are.  Hemorrhoids, in the most basic sense, are varicose veins of the lower rectum.  Well, what are varicose veins (just to be completely clear)?  Veins, just like every other part of the body, have something called “tone.”  This tone is the tightness, the resilience, the resistance of the walls of the veins to the pressure of the blood moving through them.  When the walls of the veins become lax, weak, flabby—just like when other parts become flabby, like the belly or the thighs or the chin—they begin to stretch out, sag, and lose the elasticity that allows them to rebound, causing the blood to pool and the vein to balloon from the pressure.   

Now, sure, these varicosities are unsightly and sometimes uncomfortable, but why should we care?  Varicose veins are an early indicator of something run amok with the vascular system as a whole, and the vascular system is the body’s delivery/pick-up highway that begins and ends with the heart.  So we’re not just talking about an embarrassing little problem that nobody wants to acknowledge.  We’re talking about the organ that pumps blood to every cell and organ and system in the body.  Pretty important if you ask me!  

Enter stone root—Collinsonia Canadensis—brought to King George by his botanist, Peter Collinson, introduced to it by the American Indians in 1600.  This tough little herb is known for its tonic (toning up) effect on everything it comes in contact with, with applications for everything from bruises to urinary incontinence to a congested liver to… yep, you guessed it… even hemorrhoids!  It can take time, and obviously the effects are greater with the compounded efforts of a nourishing diet, but this amazing plant is able to literally retract and pull up those distended veins.

Breastfeeding And Infertility - Are They Connected? [Episode #12]

The Age of Infertility: Wisdom from Pottenger’s Cats

For thousands of years the image of a pregnant woman, round and radiating with health, sometimes with an older baby at the breast, has been the sign of Mother Nature’s approval of our species. We see these kinds of pictures in National Geographic. The woman is content, nourished… glowing. The babies are satisfied at her breast or comfortably perched on her hip… content.

Have you noticed the fading quality of this image here at home, in the United States? The increasing concern of infertility? The diminished ability to breastfeed? The rise in infant death and sickly children?

Let’s take a moment to address some of the forbidden information surrounding what’s going on and how we can begin to turn this thing around as a society.

There was a man named Dr. Pottenger, who in the 1930s-1940s did some very interesting work with cats. To make a long story short, he fed groups of cats varying diets and then compared them over time to note the health of each generation, including lifespan, the incidence of disease, and reproductive capacity. What he found was that cats fed a diet of either pasteurized milk or cooked meat, in contrast to those fed raw milk or raw meat, had significantly shortened lifespan, increased incidence of chronic, degenerative disease, and by the third generation, an overwhelming prevalence of infertility.

So let’s think about this for just a minute. Sure, we are humans, not cats. But did you know that the nervous system of cats is remarkably close to that of humans? So while our experiences may not be identical, we should at the very least take note of generational trends and knowledge that may be applied toward preserving our own species.

Perhaps you have seen the cover of… oh, just about any magazine at the grocery store checkout. Can we agree that almost all of the featured women appear to be… well… hungry? Is it any wonder Mother Nature is deselecting these women, and many others like them, when it comes to the ability to bear children?

Don’t get me wrong. This is no indictment against women of today. We are simply responding as a society, as a culture, to the misinformation provided us by the regulatory powers that be. “Don’t eat fat.” “Don’t eat salt.” “Don’t eat meat.” “Sanitize everything.” “Pasteurize everything.” We respond with a fear of fat, a fear of animal foods, a fear of bacteria—the very things we must have to survive and thrive.

Women who eat what they crave—fat, salt, meat, including plenty of RAW foods, yes, even milk, just like Pottenger’s cats—have healthy hormonal systems, bear healthy children, and feed them healthy, rich, life-giving, RAW milk. This perpetuates the cycle and those children grow up to do the same. 

Our fertility and our children’s fertility is well within our control. That forbidden doctor—our innate intelligence—longs to cooperate with nature in bringing about generations and generations of healthy, robust offspring to carry our genetic material far into the future. Think about that as you set the table tonight. Are you following all the “rules,” or are you eating what you crave? Let’s shake things up and make a move toward really living.

Avoiding Colon Cancer Is Easier Than You Think [Episode #11]

Not Just Extra Parts

“You don’t need it.”  

“It doesn’t really do anything.”  

“We can just take that out.”

Let’s talk about your gall bladder—what it does and why it’s not just an “extra part” that can be done away with at the first hint of something gone awry.  

While it’s true gall bladder attacks can be excruciating experiences and that there are times when the gall bladder is so diseased that immediate removal is not only necessary, but a blessing, these situations are the exception, not the rule.  With 600,000 cholecystectomies performed every year, it behooves us to know when true crisis care is unavoidable and when we can rely on that “forbidden doctor” inside us to bring about healing and wholeness to the body.   

The gall bladder is to bile what the urinary bladder is to urine—it’s a holding tank.  Your liver produces approximately a quart of bile per day, and the gall bladder holds it until it’s called upon to spit out the exact amount needed when the fat you eat reaches the small intestine.  It is an integral part of the disassembly process to break down food into its usable components.  

So what happens when you have your gall bladder removed?  

First of all, just like without a urinary bladder you would experience some… ahem… embarrassing dripping of fluids, without a gall bladder to act as a holding tank for bile, it will constantly drip into the small intestine, unchecked.  Because more bile is produced at some times than others, you will at times digest fats with ease but may encounter discomfort at times of low production.  This inhibits your body’s ability to emulsify fats and to utilize fat-soluble vitamins necessary for the health of every system.  In addition, that constant flow of bile into the small intestine creates an alkaline environment, which puts you at significant risk of colorectal issues, including but not limited to cancer.  

So what can we do to keep the gall bladder in good health, and if we’ve already had it removed, how can we protect the body from serious repercussions?  

Plant and animal foods have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.  Many, such as beets, milk thistle, dandelion, and gentian, are ideal for decongesting the liver, which goes a long way to establishing healthy gall bladder function.  Eating what you crave—fats, salts, protein—also gives the gall bladder ample opportunity to practice spitting out healthful doses of bile, exactly what it was created to do.  Now if you don’t have a gall bladder, it is imperative that you supplement with bile salts, lactic acid yeast wafers for an acidified colon, and those fat-soluble vitamins we talked about, which are crucial to the health of all body systems.  

So educate yourself!  Do your research, consult that forbidden doctor within, and provide your body with the necessary and beneficial nourishment it craves in order to heal.  After all, the body is set to restore and rebuild—not to degenerate.  That gall bladder is there for a reason.  It’s not just an “extra part!”  Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

Now most people, when they think of chiropractic care, typically think of the standard “snap, crackle, and pop” of spinal manipulation that we are all so familiar with.  While that may make a person feel better in some instances—and I certainly have no problem with that—that is not what I do.  What I am looking for, when I examine a patient—abnormalities that affect the heart, lungs, stomach, immune system, reproductive system, health of the skin, eyes, ability to think—cannot be found by touch alone.  These structural problems in the body can only be seen via x-ray.  

Allow me to give you an example that is very near and dear to my heart—the story of Mary’s son.  

He was to be going into first grade when Mary and I got married; however, she had decided to hold him back a year due to him having an extremely tough time learning to read.  He was a bright boy, but he couldn’t tell the difference between the letter “U” and the number “5.”  

I x-rayed him and found that he was ten degrees out of vertical alignment.  This is huge, by the way, for a little five-year-old boy.  I made a series of corrections (small movements, not “adjustments”), which gently place the structures back into position, freeing up the nerves in the brainstem, allowing him to think.   

In one month, he was the top in his class.  He graduated from high school a salutatorian.  

I have countless stories like this one.  85% of the brain’s functioning is information coming INTO the brain.  That information—communication, really—is coming from the body, through the nerves, up through the vertebrae of the neck, and into the brain.  The disruption of these nerves as they pass through these upper cervical vertebrae can cause a whole host of dysfunctions within the body—everything from the body’s ability to regulate blood pressure or sugar levels to the hormonal release that takes place as your body goes through the process of digestion.  

So this is why I am a NUCCA doctor.  Even before your heart begins beating in utero, the nervous system is already being laid out to all the cells of the body.  A misalignment the thinness of a piece of paper has the power to wreak havoc in multiple systems.  Bones hold us up; muscles move the bones; but it’s the nervous system that is the very expression of life.  My job is to free up that expression to allow for true healing to take place, because after all, life isn’t just about staying alive—it’s about really living.

Does Nature Prefer Girls Over Boys? [Episode #8]

Survival of the Fittest?  Not So Fast, Darwin!  

Zoologists tell us that 98-99% of life that has existed on this planet is now extinct, due to environment, nutrition, and a number of factors outside our control.  It’s called “survival of the fittest,” and thanks to a guy named Darwin and his On The Origin Of Species, we tend to take these kinds of sweeping generalizations to heart, even when it comes to the human race.

“As early as 2050, one out of two children will be considered autistic.”  

“50% of newlyweds, by 2020, will be infertile.”  

These are some very serious predictions, folks, and I do believe they beg some attention.  And yet, I’d like to propose that Darwin doesn’t have to have the last word in the matter.  

While the animal kingdom does seem to be ruled to some extent by natural selection, human beings have an innate, higher intelligence, which allows us to collect and absorb information in the form of knowledge or wisdom, and then the power to choose whether to appropriately act on that information.   This effectively takes us out of the realm of “survival of the fittest” and into “forbidden doctor” territory.  

So what about you?  Will you choose to simply stand by and allow nature to take you out of the running, or will you use the forbidden information we are providing you to the best of your ability?  

We can choose to breastfeed our babies, supplying them with all they need to seed the gut walls with healthy flora and a strong immune response.  We can choose to put real food into our mouths, nourishing our bodies with what they need to prevail against what the world throws at us.  We can choose to change our lifestyles to incorporate rest and positive movement.  And even though we can’t choose when we are babies, whether or not we will be nursed and receive that good flora and a healthy start, as adults we can choose to put the probiotics and other gut healing and sealing foods and supplements into our systems to give ourselves the best fighting chance possible.  

Hippocrates, considered the “father of western medicine” may have been right when he claimed that “All diseases begin in the gut,” but I believe we have the power, as our own “forbidden doctor” and intelligent healer to turn that around and say, “All health begins in the gut” as well.  If you believe this to be true, don’t let another day pass you by in which you simply roll over to accept these kinds of doomsday prophecies.  It’s time to change your life, and maybe even the world in the process.

How To Strengthen Your Immunity - Part 2 [Episode #7]

“To vax or not to vax?”  Maybe that’s NOT the question…

The question of whether or not to vaccinate is an age-old dilemma.  There are convincing arguments on both sides, aren’t there?  Nobody wants their kids to have to get sick… and by the same token, can we ever really be 100% sure that vaccinations are not going to cause even bigger problems for our children?  As frustrating as the lack of long-term research on the subject is, the one thing we can educate ourselves around is exactly how our immune systems work and what we can do to keep them functioning at their best.  When we do this, we can be sure that whatever we decide, as pertains to vaccinations, our immune systems have their best fighting chance. 

You will hear us say again and again that approximately 85-86% of the immune system is located in the gut.  It is the beautifully orchestrated system made up of two arms of immunity: the cell-mediated response and the humeral-mediated response—and they both begin in the gut, a porous world between the inside and the outside.  T-cells, which are made in the thymus gland, end up inside the gut-associated lymphatic tissue, also known as Peyer’s patches.  These things are the police stations of the immune system and are on constant patrol, looking for things that may get through the gut wall and eventually into the bloodstream, causing an immune reaction.  

Access to the gut is through the mouth.  This is no trivial matter.  This should be a huge clue as to where our focus needs to be when we’re considering how best to heal and seal the gut, thereby strengthening the immune system.  We need to think about what we’re putting into our mouths!  The gut absorbs (or doesn’t, depending upon its health) the nutrition we take in through the mouth.  

I’m going to tell you something that you probably haven’t heard before.  And you can consider this a bit of “forbidden” information.  

Eat what you crave. 

Should I say that again, just in case it didn’t fully register?  

Eat what you crave. 

Now don’t hear what I’m not saying.  I am not saying that because you crave Doritos, your body needs Doritos.  I’m not saying cheese from a can is a good idea if that’s what you’re craving.  Unhealthful cravings need to be dealt with.  “Foods” that are barely recognizable as foods do more harm than good and are generally packed with all kinds of sugars, hydrogenated fats, and even neurotoxins like MSG or aspartame.  Stay away from that junk!  

But what I am saying is this: your forbidden doctor is inside you.  Your body possesses great wisdom.  It knows everything on this Earth.  It knows every nutrient.  It creates cravings and desires for what it needs for healing, rebuilding and restoring.  We crave fat and we crave salt and we crave protein and we crave pork and we crave red meat.  We crave all these things that the medical community claims we’re not supposed to be eating.  But you will take care of you.  As we learn about our body, as we learn that the forbidden doctor inside us, let’s move away from trying to heal from the outside in—with pharmaceuticals and surgeries—and let’s be courageous enough to start that healing process from the inside out.

How To Strengthen Your Immunity - Part 1 [Episode #6]

Today we’re going to talk about “forbidden immunity.”  Why is it forbidden?  Well, there just isn’t a lot of profit in the propagation of healthy immune systems now, is there?  Just a theory.  But we’ll let you decide as we dive in a little deeper.  We have looked at the foundations of gut health in previous blog posts, and we go into much greater detail in some of our podcasts, but today let’s take it a step further as we examine the basics of immunity.

All of life is a balance, and this goes for the gut as well, which houses around 85% of the immune system, so our focus is always on bringing back that balanced state, that homeostasis—the good, the bad, flora, viruses—because our bodies are designed to survive and thrive as one with the world around us.  Prior to the 1940s, and the ushering in of the “drugs for anything, drugs for everything” era, honoring this balance and connection between the gut and immunity by healing with nutrition, herbs, and other natural modalities to, in essence, help the body help itself was standard issue medical practice.  Over the years, this vital information has become virtually unknown, so we’re here today to bring it to light.  

There are two arms to the immune system, as far as we know at this point in time: the cell-mediated response and the humeral response.  Both are regulated to a staggeringly large degree by the health of the gut.  And when they’re both doing their jobs, as nature intends, it’s truly a beautiful thing to behold.  When they’re not, or when we try to medically force one system through a series of short-cuts—as in the case of inoculation—trouble is just around the corner.  

So let’s start with the cell-mediated response.  It’s made up of a network of white blood cells—beta lymphocytes, phagocytes, macrophages.  These are the good guys who are ready and waiting to attack at the first sign of intruders, like a cold virus, chickenpox, or even Ebola.  Their job is to destroy the bad guys.  

Now here is a bit of forbidden information for you.  At this point in the immune response, people are “sick”—the sniffles, a cough, a rash, a fever.  It’s now that you will hear people say things like, “My body hates me,” “Oh, I feel awful,” or even “My immune system must not be very strong because I’m so sick.”  But here is what you need to understand.  These signs of “sickness” are really just signs that you’re healthy.  They are evidence of a strong, capable, healthy cell-mediated response.  The sickness is not evidence that you are being overtaken by the virus but rather that the virus is being overtaken by your immune system—that you are, indeed, alive and kicking!   

Once the cell-mediated response has cleared the virus from the body, it’s time for the humeral system, also known as the antibody system, to follow suit.  It takes about four to six weeks, but now the next time that virus makes an appearance, the cell-mediated system doesn’t have to do anything because the humeral response has created antibodies, which prevent you from getting sick.  This is why you don’t get chickenpox a second time if you got sick with them as a kid.  

I mentioned vaccines above.  It’s not even about the potential dangers of vaccinating though.  You may be a huge believer in vaccinating, and that is okay.  Immunity is a well-choreographed dance between gut flora, white blood cells, antibodies.  We are set to obliterate foreign invaders and rebuild the body.  We are designed to absorb the good and excrete the bad.  A healthy gut, and thereby a healthy immune system, can handle what life throws its way—colds, flu, bacteria, Ebola, toxins, and yes, even vaccines.  So that’s the information that we hope takes hold in your mind and in your heart today.  Let’s start there.  Let’s rebuild the gut, strengthening the immune system, so that we can take on… and maybe even change the world!

Power Up Your Immune System So You Won't Get Ebola [Episode #5]

We all come into this great big world as tiny little babies—helpless, really, and completely dependent on our mothers to care for us, feed us, and keep us safe.  And as babies in the womb, our guts—as well as everything else—are completely sterile.  We are blank slates.  The process of acclimating to our surroundings is so beautifully complex, so wonderfully crafted.  Let’s take a look at that today as we marvel at the immune system and where it really all begins.  

As we travel through the birth canal, we receive our first natural inoculation, collecting some of our mother’s flora—good or bad—in our eyes, ears, mouth.  That flora, which makes up about 85% of our immune system, to a large degree, determines our future health.  Those microbes and antibodies set up shop inside the walls of our gut as they pass through, and we have now begun the process of becoming one with the world, never to be completely sterile again.  

Weary from life’s first major excursion, it’s time for a drink.  Now it is important to note that Mama’s milk doesn’t start out as “milk,” per se.  Those first few days at the breast are not so much about power-packed nutrition as they are about awakening our immune systems.  That colostrum is vitally important to a strong, capable immune system, and begins to lay the foundation for a healthy life.  And as a baby essentially has no immune system of its own for the first year of life, with every nursing, we are literally injected with everything we need to fight off the bad guys and support the good.  It is training for how we will respond to the big bugs as we become independent from our mothers and eventually set off on our own two feet.  

The medical field would have us thinking that the only protection we can have from disease, viruses, and bacteria is isolation. But I think we can all agree that from the beginning of it all—our entrance into this world—we are designed to be PART of the world.  Yes, we are separate and important and creative forces IN the world, but we need to be one with it in order that we and the world can function as we are meant to.  

So perhaps you’re thinking, “Well, that’s great, but I wasn’t born vaginally,” or “My mom never nursed me.  I was bottle-fed.”  Never you fear.  The body is an incredible thing.  Haven’t we told you about your “forbidden doctor?”  The forbidden doctor is your body.  The body is set, before birth, to restore and rebuild.  That’s why we talk so much about “healing and sealing” the gut.  It can be done!

With all the hoopla—and rightfully so—sweeping the nation surrounding Ebola, Enterovirus D68, and other viruses reaching pandemic proportion, what little information public health officials provide in the way of prevention is sorely lacking.  “Wash your hands,” “Don’t touch your eyes or nose with unwashed hands,” “Refrain from hugging or kissing those who are sick.”  Come on, guys, give us a little credit!  I don’t know about you, but when I see someone coughing or throwing up, kissing is NOT the first thing on my mind.  

So today we want to talk about some ACTUAL ways to prevent infectious disease, beginning with understanding the immune system from the inside out.  Hippocrates gave us some important information about where disease starts some 2,400 years ago when he said, “All diseases begin in the gut.”   Yes, we have a lot of fancy, new medicines, treatments, and procedures, but let me tell you, this guy knew what he was talking about!  

80-85% of our immune system is located in the gut.  The rest is in our spleen, marrow, lymphs—but the gut is our first line of defense.  First of all, it’s where we absorb nutrition so that we can rebuild the liver, lung tissue, even the skin.  But the gut has another job, and that is to produce enzymes that kill viruses, bacteria, bad yeast, bad fungi—it keeps things in balance.  It produces every antibiotic under the sun.  

As people who live in the world, we learn over time who our neighbors, our family, our friends are; we know who is safe and who is not.  But our immune systems are not so discriminating.  They view every invader as a danger.  If it’s not self, it’s the enemy.  

So what’s a human to do?  Stay indoors?  Never shake hands with or kiss another human?  Live in a bubble?  No!  That’s no way to live!  Remember that our immune system is here to help us.  So we need to do our best to help it help us.  There is a way to set our immune system up for success—to have those cells ready at a moment’s notice to fight the battle against the enemy and win.  

Our biggest problem is our Standard American Diet—SAD.  And it is sad indeed!  When most of the stuff coming down the pike is no longer technically what Mother Nature would consider food, the system begins to break down.  Holes begin to form, and stuff gets through the walls of the gut and the bloodstream that should not be there.  We begin to react to natural proteins in natural foods, like gluten and casein.  We develop allergies to things we never had a problem with before.  To protect itself, the body, in its wisdom, builds up a thick wall of mucous in the gut to prevent invaders from getting through the system, which is good… but it’s also bad, because now we aren’t absorbing nutrition and the immune system cannot function as it’s created to function.  

So what are the first steps in healing and sealing the gut?  

1.  FAT.  Chicken soup—the perfect soft, nourishing food, full of healing fat.  Other good fats are butter and cream.  Try butter in your coffee.  I put butter in my chicken soup!  Any way you can get it down, I’m all for it.  

2.  IODINE.  One of iodine’s chief jobs is to pull fats into the cell membranes, creating soft, moist, supple membranes in order that each cell can release toxins and absorb nutrition.  

 

We have a lot to say about the gut, and nearly all of it is forbidden information.  It’s not complicated though, so don’t be scared!  You can get started healing and sealing your gut, and consequently, strengthening your immune system today.
