The Forbidden Approach to Reversing Autism [Episode #17]

 A whopping 70-80% of the function of our nervous system is input to the brain.  The brain’s output is important as well, of course, and does tell the various parts of the body what to do to maintain optimum function, but the vast majority of its job is to receive information; it’s listening, hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling.  That’s why the connection between the world and our body and our body and our brain is so critical.  And that’s why, when that connection is disrupted, as is the case with autism, things have the potential to go horribly awry.  

One in 53 children in Utah today are diagnosed with autism; one in two predicted by the year 2020.

One in 20 males born today will be diagnosed with autism.  

The team at Teach Autism predicts a 230% increase in adults with autism in the next eight years.  

These are some staggering statistics and need to be addressed.  

The medical community is addressing them; however, the proposed treatment consists of medications to manage some of the symptoms of autism and behavioral modification therapies to manage, and in essence script, the behavior—what the illness looks like to society.  It does not address the underlying reasons for the disorder; nor does it hope to fix or cure the actual problem at hand.  

These are our children we’re talking about—our future.  There has to be a way.  

There is.  

First of all, the “causes” of autism are many and varied, and are almost always cumulative.  Just as in the case of POTTENGER’S CATS, discussed in an earlier blog post, we are now generations and generations malnourished, exposed to environmental and pharmaceutical toxins, and ultimately, genetically compromised, even from before birth.  Those causes are all things we can be aware of during our years of childbearing.  But what if you already have a child with autism?  

There is hope.  

I know we talk a lot about “healing and sealing the gut.”  That is because it is the single, most critical aspect of health and healing.  Without a healed and sealed gut, you cannot absorb nutrition; you cannot excrete waste; you cannot fight infection; you cannot restore and rebuild that connection between the world and the body and the body and the brain that needs so badly to take place in an autistic person.  

The GAPS diet has helped so many to finally get on the road to recovery, including people with autism.  It takes the dedication and perseverance of the entire family, but it can be done, and has been.  My challenge to you?  I don’t even need to challenge you.  If you are a parent of a child with autism, you will do whatever it takes to get your child well.  Allow us to provide the RESOURCES that can set you on that path today.

The Safe Way To Cleansing, Detoxification & Weight Loss  [Episode #15]

Everybody is about the cleanse lately—shakes, drinks, fasts—elaborate plans to clean out the colon, the liver, and whittle away that middle in time for bathing suit season.  In fact, the terms “cleansing” and “detoxification” are up 420% in Google since December 2014.  That’s saying something!  The problem is that people desperate for that beach-worthy body or wedding-dress-ready figure are willing to do just about anything it takes to achieve the results they’re looking for, sans any kind of real knowledge about the effects these types of “remedies” have on the systems of the body.  Today I’d like to break through some of the fog surrounding cleansing and detox and show you how you can get on the right path to cleaning things up and losing weight, while increasing your overall health at the same time.  

So first of all, let’s talk about what happens during a “cleanse” or “detox.”  Vegetables, fruits, bitter herbs—these are the mainstay of many cleanses, and these pull toxic build-up of chemicals and heavy metals out of the fat stores, through the lymphatic system, through the liver, through the digestive system, which act as the body’s waste management system.  

Now here is where the problem lies.  Most of us, if we have been eating what is known as the Standard American Diet—or “SAD,” more appropriately—have what we refer to as “leaky gut.”  So if you have a leaky gut and you do one of these intense cleanses in a last-ditch effort to “lose ten pounds in ten days” or “lose five inches and a dress size by this time next week,” as all the magazine covers claim is not only possible but “healthy,” all those toxins that are being pulled out of your fat stores and flushed through the liver have to go somewhere.  And if your gut is not sealed tight, like a fresh, pink, healthy tube, but instead is porous and degenerated, guess where those toxins go?  Some of them make their way out, but many of them end up right back in the bloodstream, making you sicker than you started out!  

This is why it’s so important to “heal and seal” the gut first.  I know we’ve talked about this before but it is crucial to understand the importance of a healthy gut before trying to detoxify, in order that those chemicals you’re working so hard to rid yourself of may actually make it out of the body.  

So fats and proteins heal and seal—meat, fish, dairy, eggs—and that is the number one process to set in order before considering a cleanse.  When you are ready to cleanse, you don’t need shakes and drinks and diet plans.  It can be done with real food, juices, nutrients, supplements, and we have an excellent protocol that has helped so many achieve amazing results.  So don’t go crazy with the weight-loss fad of the day.  Eat smart for total health.  We’ll give you the resources, but you are the forbidden doctor!

We All Face Death. Here's How To Prepare [Episode #14]

Live And Let Die

Death.  Talk about a “forbidden” topic of conversation!  The concept of dying and exiting this world is uncomfortable.  And yet, dying is a natural thing.  In fact, it is something we are good at from before we are born, as our cells divide and differentiate in our mother’s womb.  So while it may be just a little bit taboo, I believe that a healthy understanding of some of the events surrounding the process of death can help to eliminate the fear of the unknown as pertains to our own passing, or that of friends and family members, and perhaps even have an effect on how we choose to live. 

Our bodies are made to live, but they are also made to die.  All the way down to a single cell—apoptosis, the natural death of a cell—the idea is for each cell to be healthy enough that it lives the life it’s programmed to live until it’s programmed to die.  Even though death can seem like an event—sudden, unexpected, final—it is indeed a process, and one that follows a sort of pattern we can be aware of. 

Three main control systems within the body that are geared toward keeping us alive from moment to moment are:  the regulation of oxygen and carbon dioxide, arterial blood pressure, and extracellular constituents such as electrolytes and basic chemical balances.  As we approach death, these (and other) functions begin to change, and what was once considered to be “autoregulated” begins to be “deregulated,” and the process of death commences. 

As systems weaken, breathing slows.  As breathing slows, less oxygen is available to the muscles and the body becomes tired.  Lack of interest, diminished appetite, and a restlessness that may show itself in repetitive motions such as picking at the bed linens or even at the air—all just signs of less and less oxygen being made available to the tissues, organs, and brain.  Involuntary loss of urine or feces is possible, as the muscles that control the bowel and bladder relax.  Trouble regulating temperature, and pallor may occur, as blood pressure drops and less blood travels to the surface of the skin.  The swallowing reflex weakens to such an extreme that in the last moments of life, an accumulation of fluid at the back of the throat can create what is known as the “death rattle.” 

As alarming as some of these things may be, understanding that death is merely a part of life, and that in death we find ultimate rest—a ceasing—and that moving on is really more like doing absolutely nothing, we may find comfort. 

In some cultures it is common practice to place a hand on the head of the person who has just breathed his or her last and say something to the effect of “Now you have died and will leave your body.  Your work here is finished.  There is nothing you can take with you.  Let go of everything, including all regrets, and be your true self, a being of light and love for all those you have known and not known.  Now you can learn everything you need, generate supreme faith and devotion to your refuge and the wish to be unified with your God.”

My challenge to you—don’t wait until the dying process begins.  With the awareness of the reality of death and what it will bring, let go of regrets now; be your true self; and get to living!

“Now you have died and will leave your body. Your work here is finished. There is nothing you can take with you. Let go of everything, including all regrets, and be your true self, a being of light and love for all those you have known and not known. Now you can learn everything you need, generate supreme faith and devotion to your refuge, and now the wish to be unified with your God.”

Eliminating Hemorrhoids Once And For All [Episode #13]

Imagine, if you will:  Candlelight, soft music… Your lover gazes softly at you from across the table.  The kids are at Grandma’s house.  The atmosphere smells of hormones.  Pupils are dilated.  A gentle touch, the promise of soon being much… much closer… 

Then it hits!  The dreaded “H-word.”  You know the one.  HEMORRHOIDS.  They know no bounds of race, creed, or economic status.  They care not to which political party you subscribe or what country club you’re a member of. 

The all too familiar burning, itching, irritation begs even the most dignified among us to stealthily conceal creams and wipes and pads promising freedom from this most undignified situation amongst the cereal and pasta in the bottom of the shopping cart. 

The problem is—as with most of our crisis care based healthcare system—that those creams and wipes and pads are really only focused on reducing symptoms… for a time.  They do nothing to address the reason behind (no pun intended) the symptoms.  

Well, what if I told you the reason behind the symptoms is ridiculously simple to treat?  Inexpensive?  Non-invasive?  Doesn’t involve humiliation or pulling or cutting or bleeding from the bum in front of a room full of medical professionals? Is your interest piqued yet?  

First let’s be clear on exactly what hemorrhoids are.  Hemorrhoids, in the most basic sense, are varicose veins of the lower rectum.  Well, what are varicose veins (just to be completely clear)?  Veins, just like every other part of the body, have something called “tone.”  This tone is the tightness, the resilience, the resistance of the walls of the veins to the pressure of the blood moving through them.  When the walls of the veins become lax, weak, flabby—just like when other parts become flabby, like the belly or the thighs or the chin—they begin to stretch out, sag, and lose the elasticity that allows them to rebound, causing the blood to pool and the vein to balloon from the pressure.   

Now, sure, these varicosities are unsightly and sometimes uncomfortable, but why should we care?  Varicose veins are an early indicator of something run amok with the vascular system as a whole, and the vascular system is the body’s delivery/pick-up highway that begins and ends with the heart.  So we’re not just talking about an embarrassing little problem that nobody wants to acknowledge.  We’re talking about the organ that pumps blood to every cell and organ and system in the body.  Pretty important if you ask me!  

Enter stone root—Collinsonia Canadensis—brought to King George by his botanist, Peter Collinson, introduced to it by the American Indians in 1600.  This tough little herb is known for its tonic (toning up) effect on everything it comes in contact with, with applications for everything from bruises to urinary incontinence to a congested liver to… yep, you guessed it… even hemorrhoids!  It can take time, and obviously the effects are greater with the compounded efforts of a nourishing diet, but this amazing plant is able to literally retract and pull up those distended veins.
